Can you hear them crying?

Can you hear them crying? “God did not make us equal, look at us all here. None of us has enough food”. The desperate mother of a starving child said in Niger. Why is there so much hunger in the world?

Hunger is an overall issue. Malnutrition does not affect just a few people in the world, children from Asia, Africa, Latin America, etc, are not well feed. Starvation is a problem that affects most of the countries nowadays. Famine is not just feeling hungry; famine is the lack of enough protein and food that provides energy. Malnutrition plays an important role in at least half of the 10.9 million child deaths each year.

Poverty is the principal cause of hunger because of the unequal income distribution all over the world. Million of people around the world live with less than one dollar per day, with this amount; they can’t afford food to feed all their starving children. By causing poor health, low levels of energy, and even mental impairment, hunger can lead to greater poverty by reducing people’s ability for work. That’s the way this is an endless chain.

Population is also an important fact for increasing starvation. It has been noticed that poor countries who are starving are the ones with bigger population. Globally, it is growing too, but for Third World countries, such increase of population is an important strain. It makes even more difficult for Developed nations to help them by providing enough resources so that food can reach every single corner on earth.

It is outrageous that for the price of one missile, a school full of hungry children could eat lunch every day for 5 years. Everyday more nations are helping poor countries sending food, however some of them are more focused on their own political problems. It is a shame they don’t make aside military investment for a while because 100 million deaths could be prevented for the price of 10 Stealth Bombers, or what the world spend on its military in only two days.

Daily, there’s enough food produced to feed every human on earth, but poor countries don’t have the right conditions to get all these food. Globally, about 4.3 pounds of food are produced daily for every man, woman, and child on the planet. What happens with all that food? Most of it is wasted! 3004 pounds of food is wasted per second all over the world!

Unfortunately, nowadays, people are more concerned on natural catastrophes, wars, abortion, global warming, etc than on the terrible situation many countries in Africa and all over the world are going through. We should start helping; it’s not difficult. There are many supporting organizations we can join to donating money.

We must star turning ourselves towards all those unfortunate countries that are starving, that are begging for help, whose cries hadn’t been heard yet.
