Differences and similarities between Elizabeth and Jane Bennet in the novel Pride and Prejudice
Although Elizabeth and Jane are sisters, both have their own personality. Usually people think sisters or brothers must be alike in character. They believe this because they live in the same family, with the same customs, and the same breeding. Despite what people might think, Elizabeth and Jane have a different character, although both are respectable young ladies. Mainly, the difference between them is the way both perceive their atmosphere and the people in it.
Elizabeth and Jane are both good-looking. The reader can get this from dialogues; Jane is much prettier than Elizabeth. Although by description and development of the story, the reader realizes Elizabeth is more handsome than Jane. Darcy agrees with it. At first Elizabeth didn’t call up on Darcy’s attention and made him stared at her twice. After some time, Darcy felt caught by Elizabeth’s beauty, air and intelligence. Jane, for example made Bingley feel attracted towards her from the very first time. All of their friends considered both were the prettiest women in town.
Character was a big difference between the two sisters. On one hand Jane was the sweetest of the Bennets. She thought people weren’t bad enough to make any harm. She always tried to explain it to Elizabeth. She made her understand people might have a reason for doing what they did. On the other hand, Elizabeth was a strong woman. Her only defect was to be prejudice as it made her have several misunderstandings. Elizabeth and Jane were the smartest in the family. Elizabeth always tried to make her dad responsible of his flirty daughters. She didn’t have success. Her dad kept letting younger Bennets do whatever they liked without reproaching them later.
Elizabeth and Jane were the favorite daughters of their parents. Mrs. Bennet was pleased with Jane because Mrs. Bennet only cared about getting all her daughters married. As Jane was Bingley’s “girlfriend”, Mrs. Bennet was really happy with Jane. Jane was the one who would save her family from poverty. Mr. Bennet had his favorite daughter too. She was Elizabeth. Her dad felt really proud of her because she wasn’t like the other young ladies in that time. She didn’t care about money or getting married. She was an intelligent woman who just wanted to be happy.
Elizabeth and Jane, both intelligent and pretty, were the best friends. Besides being sisters, they trusted each other. They could talk about any subject for hours and perfectly understood what each one meant. Usually, when they had problems or doubts about something, they asked for her sister’s advice and help. As both were different, when they were together, they found the perfect balance. Their personality made them attractive, interesting and completely different from all the other girls. Jane Austen successfully chose Jane and Elizabeth for the woman stereotype of the 18th century period.
