Essay "Much Ado about Nothing"

Differences between the two relationships in the play Much Ado About Nothing

by Diana Karen Navarro

Hero and Claudio were the opposite from Beatrice and Benedick. In the play “Much Ado About Nothing”, written by William Shakespeare, relation between couples is the most important element in the story. Shakespeare tried to write about two possible ways romance develops between couples. Mainly, the difference is the way each couple express their feelings. This expression depends on each character’s personality and background.

Beatrice and Benedick were too proud to say what they felt. Although both were crazy in love with the other, they couldn’t accept it. Usually they tried to hide their love with nonsense discussions. Almost all the times they were arguing and insulting each other. In the other hand, Claudio and Hero accepted what they felt at the very first time. The only thing they needed was to stare at each other for a while to fall in love.

Hero was a sweet woman, who obeyed her father. Beatrice was a witty woman. Beatrice said she wouldn’t get married. Once, she let everyone know there was no man for her. They could be too old, or too young, but none would suit her. What she was doing, was hiding her feelings, so Benedick would never discover Beatrice loved him. In despite of Hero, who never hided her affection to Claudio; she showed it to everyone. Hero was sure too about Claudio’s feelings about her.

Claudio and Hero didn’t need help to get married the first time, Beatrice and Benedick did. Almost everyone in the play helped them to be together. Their friends and relatives knew none of them would accept the love he or she felt for the beloved one. Through the play develops the audience realizes love between Beatrice and Benedick is endless. Although, Claudio and Hero love each other Claudio doesn’t trust Hero at all. Hero was belied and Claudio believed everything. Communication wasn’t good between Claudio and Hero. Probably, if Beatrice was belied, Benedick would ask first Beatrice. Then he would judge if what they have said was true.

Beatrice and Benedick truly loved each other. However, they enjoyed making fun of the other in front of everyone in the play. Both were witty and proud, so none would let the other make sport of he or she. Claudio and Hero didn’t need to embarrass each other. Claudio and Hero’s relation was simple and without complications. While Beatrice and Benedick were arguing, Claudio and Hero enjoyed the moment and how much they loved each other.
